What is a CoA?
A Certificate of Analysis (CoA) is a document that records the results of an analytical test of a substance. In the context of research peptides, the CoA typically documents the purity, identity, and other analytical parameters of a specific production batch.
Crucially, a CoA is only meaningful if it has been issued by an independent, accredited third-party laboratory — not by the manufacturer themselves. A self-issued CoA has no independent evidentiary value.
What does a CoA contain?
A complete CoA for a research peptide typically contains the following information:
| Parameter |
Significance |
| Product name & sequence |
Compound identification, amino acid sequence |
| Batch number |
Unique identification of the analyzed production batch |
| Purity (HPLC) |
Percentage of the target compound — measured via HPLC-UV |
| Molecular weight |
Confirmation via mass spectrometry (MS) |
| Analytical method |
HPLC-UV, MS, NMR, or combination |
| Analytical laboratory & date |
Name of the issuing laboratory and analysis date |
Important
A CoA is always batch-specific. It applies exclusively to the analyzed batch — not to all of a provider's products. A CoA issued once provides no information about subsequent batches.
How to read a purity value?
The purity value in the CoA — typically expressed as a percentage such as "≥98%" — indicates what proportion of the measured substance is accounted for by the target compound. In an HPLC-UV analysis, the peak area of the target compound is calculated in relation to the total peak area.
What does this mean in practice?
- →≥98% — high analytical purity, standard for research-grade peptides
- →95–97% — acceptable for many research applications, but not research-grade standard
- →Below 95% — generally not suitable for precise research applications
Why is a CoA indispensable for research peptides?
There is no regulatory mandate for independent quality testing in the research peptide market. This means: without a CoA from an independent laboratory, there is no verified proof of a compound's purity or identity.
However, batch quality is crucial for the reproducibility of research results. Variations in purity or impurities can significantly influence outcomes in cell culture and preclinical models.
A batch-specific CoA from an accredited third-party laboratory is therefore not just a quality feature — it is a fundamental prerequisite for scientifically robust research with synthetic peptides.
CoA at Pepwerk
Pepwerk publishes a batch-specific CoA for every released batch — issued by an independent accredited laboratory in Germany. The documents are publicly accessible in the CoA library and contain HPLC-UV purity values as well as mass spectrometry confirmation of molecular identity.
Batches that do not meet our minimum purity of ≥98% are not released and not sold.
