What are peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the building blocks of proteins. They are formed by linking two or more amino acids via peptide bonds. Depending on the number of amino acids, they are referred to as dipeptides (2 AA), tripeptides (3 AA), oligopeptides (up to approx. 20 AA), or polypeptides (more than 20 AA).

Peptides occur naturally in the human organism and fulfill diverse functions — as hormones, neurotransmitters, signaling molecules, and enzyme regulators. Synthetic peptides are chemically produced analogs of these naturally occurring compounds or completely newly designed molecules.

What does “Research Peptide” mean?

The term “research peptide” — in German: Forschungspeptid — refers to synthetically produced peptides intended exclusively for use in preclinical research. They are not intended for human or animal consumption and do not possess regulatory approval as medicinal products.

Research peptides are typically used in the following research contexts:

  • In vitro cell culture models for studying signal transduction pathways
  • Preclinical animal models for investigating biochemical mechanisms
  • Analytical method development and validation studies
  • Structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies in drug discovery

Research Use Only

The designation “Research Use Only” (RUO) identifies products that are intended exclusively for research purposes in authorized laboratory environments. They are not intended for diagnostic, therapeutic, or other clinical applications.

Regulatory context in the EU

In the European Union, research peptides are not subject to authorization as medicinal products as long as they are distributed and used exclusively for research purposes. They do not fall under Directive 2001/83/EC if they are not intended for use in humans or animals.

Providers of research peptides are obliged to clearly label the intended purpose and ensure that the products are delivered exclusively to authorized research institutions. For their part, buyers are responsible for complying with applicable national regulations.

Since research peptides are used in preclinical research models, their analytical quality is crucial for the reproducibility of research results. The recognized standard for research-grade peptides includes:

  • ≥98% purity via HPLC-UV analysis
  • Identity confirmation via mass spectrometry

  • Lyophilized form for maximum stability and shelf life
